Formation of jowls is a sign of ageing that tends to develop in the 40s, becoming more pronounced during the 50s. Almost everyone develops jowls as they age. It occurs as gravity combines with decreased elasticity to pull the skin and tissues downwards. Over time, this effect can actually change the shape of the face from a youthful V to a more ageing U shape, leaving softness around the skin, jawline and neck.
Jowls tend to be most pronounced in those who have lost weight, as the skin becomes looser after weight loss. They tend to be less noticeable among those who have thicker skin, more fat, or more collagen in the area below the cheeks and chin. They are also less prominent for those who naturally have good bone structure with a strong jaw/chin, but more obvious among those with a softer jawline and recessive chin.
We are all aware of the wrinkle-reducing effects of Botox, but its benefits go much further than that. When administered strategically in the jaw and neck, it can affect the lower face by reducing the appearance of minor sagging skin and jowls. This will prevent the muscles from contracting, which would make wrinkles visible or develop even further.
If the issue is that the jowls are significant, then this can be harder to treat with just Botox alone.
Botox is best known for its use in anti-ageing treatments for the upper face, where it can be highly effective in reducing the appearance of laughter lines and forehead wrinkles.
However, advanced practitioners are also able to offer Botox for sculpting the lower facial features and providing a subtle ‘lift’ effect that helps patients to look younger and refreshed.
This is an advanced use of Botox that tends to only be offered by experienced medical professionals who have extensive experience in anti-ageing injectable treatments.
Botox for jowls is a treatment that is carried out using botulinum toxin to lift the jowls area, thereby improving the definition of the jawline.
The botulinum toxin product injected is exactly the same as that which is used for treating wrinkles and excessive sweating. It is the same strength and formulation. The difference with Botox treatment for jowls is where the injections are placed.
Botox injections in the jowls area can produce a subtle lifting effect which helps to restore a more youthful profile. The treatment may also be combined with dermal fillers for a greater impact; as fillers can be used to replenish lost volume, adding a structure that lifts the tissues.
Dermal fillers can be used to restore mid-face (cheek) volume or the area just in front of the ears to help temporarily reduce the appearance of jowls – particularly if you’re noticing saggy skin from volume loss. Another option is to place fillers in front of the jowl, in the ‘dent’ that forms between the jowl and chin (what’s known as the pre-jowl sulcus). It’s a normal phenomenon for bone loss to occur here, and volume replacement can help improve this in some patients.
